Franklin: I voted for raise because of cost of living (7/11)
...
A.B. Franklin addresses the League of Women Voters on Sept. 17, 2007, during his race for the District 34 State Rep. seat.
...
A.B.Franklin said he changed his mind about whether state legislators should receive a pay raise because of the rising cost of living in Baton Rouge.
Franklin told the American Press on Thursday that he voted for the controversial pay increase because living expenses had tripled since he took office in January.
"The cost of food, gas and living have all gone up in the last four months," he said.
...
Franklin said he also rejected a pay raise when he served on the Lake Charles City Council.
Franklin was the only member of the Southwest Louisiana legislative delegation to vote for the controversial raise.
The decision sparked Lake Charles businessman Joe Miller Jr. to file a recall petition against Franklin.
...
Franklin said he changed his position on the issue because the legislators spent six months in Baton Rouge instead of the regular three months.
"We were there for two special sessions and the regular session, and there was an orientation even before that," he said.
Franklin said that at first, he chose to stay in hotel rooms instead of renting an apartment.
"The hotels were expensive, and they were too noisy," he said."Now I'm going to find an apartment that I can sign a year lease with."
He said that he will now have to pay for two homes during his time in office.
"It's like a home away from home, but you've got to have it," he said.
