"I go after the winners who aren't on the job market - and get them," said William E. Frank Jr., managing director of Stanton Chase, a specialist in retained searches.

"I try to have three or four qualified individuals for each position," Frank said.

Sometimes, a single job search turns into multiple fees."I knew I was doing everything right on one search when all four candidates were hired by Sylvan Learning Centers," he said."Each executive was such a find that positions were created for each of them."

Salaries vary by region, industry and size of the market.A sales manager in South Florida may command a $120,000 annual base, but a cab driver in San Francisco or a top building doorman in New York can earn just as much, Frank said. The difference is in the cost of living.Three years ago, executives would leave comfortable positions, lured by the glamour of stock options.Today, the pendulum has swung away from options and toward salary. That's not the only recent change.

"At least half of our competitors are gone, many with the dot-com implosion," Frank said.
