Family lawyer Vanessa Fox, at Leeds-based law firm Keeble Hawson, said wealthy people would now think twice before getting married, as a breakdown in the relationship could prove extremely costly.

She said the ruling meant someone could effectively "win the lottery" by marrying a rich person for a short time.

The Law Lords ruled a woman was entitled to £5m of her former husband's assets after two years and nine months of marriage.

And another ex-wife awarded £250,000 a year from her former husband's earnings was told she can keep her maintenance payments for life if necessary.
