That's the best way to benefit from a round of golf, according to Aaron Fox, exercise physiologist with KSB Corporate Health Services.

"The biggest benefit is they're getting their cardio-vascular workout in - if they're walking," he said.

Of course, golfers do not walk continuously while on the course. They must stop to play each hole along the way.

"It tends to be more anaerobic though, ... but eventually it does add up and it's still much more beneficial over not being out there at all," said Fox.

The duration of the game and the fact most golf courses are hilly also heightens the health benefits to walking on a course.

"It's not as good as if you go on a regular walk because you're stopping a lot, but most golf courses aren't too flat so it's a harder workout for most walkers," said Fox.

"And if you play nine holes, you're out there two or two and a half hours; and if you play 18, it's about four hours."

To maintain one's optimum level of health, Fox recommends everyone do some type of exercise every day.Since most people do not have time, and in some cases the money, to golf every day, golf can be worked in one or more times a week to add variety to one's regular exercise regimen.

"Golf would be a good way to supplement an exercise program," said Fox.
    ...
"You want to get the body prepared before you go out and golf for the first time," said Fox.
