"We were able to control that quickly," Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier said.

While the flying embers threatened the neighborhood, no other buildings caught fire and no one was injured in extinguishing the flames.

Fournier estimated the loss of the home and contents at $25,000 after crews spent almost two hours putting out the blaze, but said the cause of the fire will remain undetermined.

    "It was accidental," he said.

It took 30 firefighters more than an hour to control the fire, which burned two acres of grass, leaves, stumps and trees on Bragdon Road, an area off Curtis Road near Route 136, according to Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier.
    ...
"There was a gentleman that was cutting wood down there," Fournier said, who improperly discarded a cigarette that ignited dry grass and leaves.

The fire blazed out of control, and the man called the fire department at 1:49 p.m. Crews from Yarmouth, Pownal and Durham helped Freeport firefighters with the fire while personnel from Yarmouth and Brunswick covered Freeport's fire station during the call.

"We had several homes in the area, but we were able to keep the fire away from them," Fournier said, adding that no one was injured in fighting the fire.

Firefighters had cleared the scene by 3:30 p.m.

Fournier warned residents of this week's dry conditions."The surface of the forest and grasslands are very dry, and people need to be very cautious of grass when discarding cigarettes and other lit material," he said.

The child, whose name has not been released, jumped off the float toward her father, who was walking beside the float, and was run over by the rear wheels of the trailer, said Freeport Fire Chief Darrel Fournier, who was on scene.

"The thing I'm very pleased with is that the trauma doctors and Maine Medical Center said due to the aggressive treatment of a paramedic and the rescue crew, they pretty much saved her life en route," Fournier said.

Fournier said the incident reinforces the "critical importance" of having trained staff on hand at the fire station. Whenever an event in town - like Friday's parade - is likely to draw a crowd, Fournier said he makes sure he has additional volunteer rescue staff at the station. In this case, that may have made the difference.
    ...
The weather at the time of the parade was "on and off heavy rain," Fournier said.

The 1:21 a.m. call drew 23 members of the Freeport Fire Department, with the first four heading over on the Freeport Harbormaster's boat and 19 more on the Bustin's Island ferry, the Lilly B, Fire Chief Darrel Fournier said. Despite the low tide, the boats were anchored near the shoreline and used as a platform for a portable pump to draw seawater for the effort.

By the time the Freeport fire team arrived on the island at 1:55 a.m., the island volunteers had the island's tank truck, pump truck, water tank and brush truck on the scene, Fournier said, but the two-story wooden structure had "pretty much collapsed in on itself. Fire personnel soaked two 200-pound propane tanks attached to the home and removed them to minimize the danger, but the home, owned by John Thomas III of Freeport, was a total loss, Fournier said. He estimated the damage, with the building's contents, at about $200,000.

Thanks to islanders' quick work, though, another home within 20 feet was saved. Volunteers doused the structure with water, Fournier said, resulting in only a small amount of damage from radiant heat. "They did a good job protecting that other structure," he said.

Fournier said he will return to the island today to further investigate the cause.
