The house had an oil heater and their service had not been turned off, but the Gorynskis had not been using it, Flynn said.Clothing draped too close to one of the space heaters ignited the fire that quickly spread throughout the house, which was filled with combustible piles of clothes, newspapers and other clutter.
"Everything that you would keep in your drawers and closets in your attic was piled throughout the house.It was just strewn throughout the house and piled in alleyways," Flynn said."It added fuel to the fire ... and created real hazardous conditions for our members."

An off-duty New York City firefighter who lives in the neighborhood had tried to get into the back of the house before Yonkers firefighters arrived on the scene, but the heat and smoke were too strong, Flynn said.
