John Flynn is well placed to provide commentary on the industry. He is the president and chief executive of World Star Aviation in San Francisco, a company that leases aircraft to the big airlines.

"It's always struck me as odd that if you have two people sitting side by side and one has a bag and one doesn't that there's no charge for that bag, and so finally the airlines are beginning to charge, for the cost of putting the bag in the belly of the aeroplanes," he told AM.

He says it is now just a matter of time before other airlines follow suit.

"You can't go from 50 cents a gallon to $4 a gallon, which is what many of these carriers are paying, and not expect to see it in the price of the ticket," he said.

"I'd say the days of cheap fares are probably behind us."

He also says more lay-offs are imminent, as the industry shrinks to a profitable level.

""The way you do that is that you reduce costs and the best way to reduce costs is reduce your aeroplanes, then there are a number of people assigned, in effect, to every aeroplane," he said.

He says the industry as a whole is unlikely to turn a profit in 2008, and the Australian sector is facing a similarly grim outlook.

"Australia and New Zealand are a long way away from the rest of the world and therefore they have a disproportionately large fuel bill on their international carriers," he said.
