Broker of hope: John Flynn helped set up a deal to assist special education children in Peru.
...
That's how John Flynn, development director of the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center at KU, described his trip to Lima, Peru.He was there in August to attend dedication ceremonies for a new addition to a center that helps children and young adults with retardation, autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities.
Flynn acted as a broker to match donors in South Dakota with the Ann Sullivan Center in Lima.As a result, a brand new section of building was dedicated Aug. 21, giving the center 4,500 square feet of new classrooms, offices and a medical clinic.
...
What convinced Flynn to get involved was a graphic story that Liliana Mayo, the general director of the Ann Sullivan Center, related to him at their first meeting.
...
"She told me that 20-some years ago, she would go into different families' homes and these kids would be locked up in closets or tied to beds - sitting in their own stool," Flynn said, "because in Peru, people had no idea what to do with these kids, and the government didn't help."
That's what inspired Mayo to found the center in her parents' garage in 1979.
...
Flynn describes her motivation this way: "She's just a really good person.
...
Flynn knew Vince and Mary Spader of Desmet, S.D., because they had been business partners with Flynn's parents.
...
When Flynn proposed that the couple help the Ann Sullivan Center, the answer wasn't long in coming.
"We weren't on the phone for more than five minutes when they asked, 'How much do you need?'" he said.
...
For the dedication ceremonies, Flynn and the Spader family flew to Lima.
...
Flynn called it one of the most satisfying projects he has ever worked on.But he can't get the picture of Jose, the driver who transported him to the airport, out of his mind.
Jose can't afford to send his son to the Ann Sullivan Center so he serves as a driver for the center in exchange for tuition. On the drive to the airport, Jose was speaking rapidly and earnestly, attempting to tell Flynn something.
Flynn doesn't speak Spanish, but he didn't need to.He knew that Jose was thanking him profusely for helping his son.

No, as the Gospel of John tells us: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us" (1:14).
