Mr. Johnny Floyd named 2006 Distinguished CooperatorThe Georgia Cooperative Council recently named John B. Floyd the 2006 Distinguished Cooperator, citing his numerous contributions to electric cooperatives spanning 35 years.
Held March 6, the Georgia Distinguished Cooperator Award ceremony is held annually to recognize and honor men and women for outstanding achievement and service to the cooperative movement.
"We select folks whose leadership has made a direct impact on the success of EMCs in the state and their ability to provide reliable and safe electricity to Georgians," says Dick Schermerhorn, professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Georgia and executive secretary of the Co-op Council.
Floyd has been a guiding influence for EMCs across the state, serving with distinction as a member of the Oconee EMC board of directors since 1970, holding the positions of secretary-treasurer, vice chairman, and chairman since 2003.
Additionally, he has held top posts in statewide organizations, serving as board chairman of Oglethorpe Power Corp., a power supplier serving 38 of Georgia's 42 EMCs, and board member of Georgia EMC, a statewide trade association representing the state's 42 electric cooperatives.
He also has been an influential presence at the national level, serving as a member of the board of directors for both the Cooperative Finance Corporation and National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation.
Floyd and his wife, Linda, are members of West Highland Baptist Church where he serves as a member of the administrative council and chairman of the finance committee.
