He learned Dutch so he could translate Afrikaans , the language of South Africa.He translated documents for the CIA , U.S. State Department and National Security Agency , he said.He transferred to Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1981 and retired here in 1983.
For the next 16 years , Floyd was a New York Life Insurance Co. representative and sales manager.In 1999 he moved to a similar position at Key Bank Corp.
Floyd is married with three children , Anesha , 23 , an East High graduate ; Doron , 17 , a Bartlett High senior ; and Kerstin , 15 , who attends Anchorage Christian School.
The Central Labor Council , an umbrella organization for Anchorage unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO , endorses Floyd because of his civic activities and because of the contact union members have had with him , said Valeria Buffone , a spokeswoman.

Floyd and Steele each say they hope to raise and spend as much as $20 , 000 on the campaign.
