3-25 Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues - 1 Corinthians 14 Background/Introduction Mark did a great talk on Sunday about gifts of the Holy Spirit which you / your homegroup might have attended.Mark made the point that ‘cessasionism' (the argument that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were only present in NT times and ended after the early church) is one that is losing credence, even amongst conservative evangelicals. He gently challenged us as a church to be willing to think about these things - they are in the bible and we need to grapple with them if we are to be faithful to God's word.He asked us to consider whether our openness to consider the gifts of the Spirit was partly shaped by our personality type (i.e. right brain/creative/emotional or left brain/logical/rational) rather than by what we think God is saying. He also reassured us that these issues can be ‘scarey' for some of us and that we should not be looking to adopt another church's model but to find our own way with prayer and God's guidance and by studying God's word. That's by way of background - but I think it sets a good context for how we might approach this passage as a church. I don't expect you will have it all sewn up by the end of your group, but it will be good to give it some serious consideration and get us all thinking. Try and get your group to hold back from letting forth with their personal experiences until later in the study - make sure you rein them in and spend time looking at and understanding God's word first.
