Bloomington High School South Principal Mark Fletcher said the new way of transporting students is estimated to save the total transportation budget 25 to 40 percent.

The idea of the activity buses came after both Fletcher and Bloomington High School in North Principal Jeff Henderson discussed it with other conference Indiana schools, Fletcher said.

"Summer school is not something that we wanted to (cut)," Fletcher said."I think students will be able to make up classes.Right now we have 60 opportunities to receive credits."

Fletcher said only 40 credits are required for students to graduate from high school. Students will still make up credits to graduate on time by using a program called NovaNet during the school year, Fletcher said.

"I think these kids have learned a powerful lesson, one which we all should consider in regards to where these things could lead in the digital age," said Bloomington South principal Mark Fletcher.

Fletcher said the school has been unsuccessful in attempts to have the pictures removed from the Web site.

I think it was a symbolic salute to the way in which all the rescue workers responded to this national tragedy , said school principal Mark Fletcher.Just when you start to question the maturity level of today's kids , you see something like this and it makes you feel good about what they're made of..

Fletcher says what many students did on dress-up day was just one of the ways the student body showed concern and compassion for people touched by the tragedy.

They've raised funds , written letters to families and put up displays in the hallways , he said.I'm very impressed by the way our kids have responded..

Costume caveat

"Bloomington is very fortunate, both in terms of the supply of teachers and supply of administrators," said Bloomington High School South principal Mark Fletcher, a 1978 graduate of South who was an assistant principal at Southport before returning to the MCCSC ranks in 1999.

"It's a very nice place to live, a great and strong community, and we have all these available links with IU.That gives you a fighting chance to get and retain good people," he said.

"No question, the job is a challenge," he said."I think it's more a way of life.If you enjoy the challenges, and I'm crazy enough to, then you couldn't find anything better.But you'd better come in ready to meet those challenges every day."

Fletcher said his school encourages students to connect with faculty to prepare them for the future and encourage them to graduate.

"Our school is set up in such a way to provide as many connections to school as possible, through teachers, counselors and mentors," he said."The mentor stays with the student throughout their four years in high school.This provides a safety net and a foundation for future education."

Fletcher noted the challenge of providing each student with the resources they need due to the recent budget deficit.

"Since the class sizes are up, due to the state budget deficit, it is even more important we provide students with a strong connection to the school," Fletcher said.

Mark Fletcher, principal of Bloomington High School South, said the primary importance is on abstinence.

"We also teach our students about STDs, and that is where condom education comes into play," Fletcher said.
