Mark Fletcher, a Foreign Service Officer (FSO) posted to Industry Canada's International Trade Centre in Halifax, whom she worked with as an intern with Trade Team Nova Scotia, was the most influential in her present career choice. He pushed her to take the Foreign Service exam.It is a grueling process that takes 10-12 months and encompasses a battery of tests, interviews and simulation exercises.Of approximately 6500 applicants annually less than 5 per cent are successful. She summarizes the experience in one word: "intense".
The breadth of her academic background has certainly provided her with knowledge valuable to her position with the Department of International Trade (ITCan).Over the past three years as a Trade Commissioner in Ottawa she has learned a great deal to prepare her for her new post. Most of her time in Ottawa was spent promoting Canadian environmental technologies around the world and organizing training programs for trade officers posted abroad. As Trade Commissioner in Turkey she will be responsible for economic reporting and analysis of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan and will play a part in developing more trade opportunities for Canadian companies in these countries.
