Born in St. Louis, Flaskamp was a state champion debater.He graduated from high school at 16 and went to Georgetown University on a full football scholarship.He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and later in the Minnesota Air National Guard, earning the rank of brigadier general.After law school at the University of Michigan, Flaskamp moved to Minnesota and started his law practice.In the early 1960s, Flaskamp handled the complaints of citizens who said that the supersonic planes flying out of Wold-Chamberlain Field had damaged their property.Consistently recognized as one of the state's best trial lawyers, Flaskamp was popular among juries, judges and attorneys for his intelligence, charm and sense of humor.
