Jennifer Fisher, ISU's vice president for academic advancement, said the figures could have been even higher had more classes for freshmen and sophomores been made available. But she said university leaders are upbeat.

"We're very pleased that we've been able to attract as many students as we have," she said."It's hard to grow when you're limited by the number of classes offered."

Fisher explained the numbers reflect a nearly 4 percent growth in the undergraduate portion of the student body. For this fall, 10,552 undergrads enrolled at ISU, compared to 10,160 in fall 2003.

One area of decline was in ISU's College of Technology, where Fisher said numbers were down from 1,816 last fall to 1,698 this year.

She attributed the decline to numerous former Astaris employees having recently completed the College of Technology's farm business management program.

"Frankly, it was a really interesting fall for us," Fisher said."One of our pushes this fall was to get local high school students enrolled."

Fisher praised the efforts of ISU staff who worked hard to help register high school seniors in dual enrollment programs and area teachers in professional development courses before the Sept. 3 cutoff date.

Jennifer Fisher, ISU assistant vice president for academic affairs, said Idaho Place would allow the schools to provide academic programs not currently available in the Treasure Valley.

"It's a collaborative center where we are meeting the education needs of Boise and the greater Treasure Valley," Fisher said.

"Both of our institutions have had a presence in Boise for several years. But Idaho Place represents more then just a change of address. The Treasure Valley is the fastest growing area in the state and the area needs what our institutions can offer."

ISU plans to offer the master degrees in health care currently available at their existing facilities in Boise, and will add a new degree in clinical laboratory science and offer a dental residency program.

Pocatello Idaho State Journal: Boise expansion key to... - [Cached Version]

"It's really critical to know that ISU's mission is the health sciences and that it's a statewide mission," said Jennifer Fisher, assistant vice president for academic affairs."So in order to serve the state of Idaho it's critical that we not only take our health programs to the Treasure Valley, but also throughout the state."

Since Boise is the state capital and a central location, ISU officials say it's only natural to gravitate toward the area.

"It not only has a great diversity in population and that's where the growth is, but there's opportunity for our students to work at clinical sites that aren't available in rural Idaho," Fisher said.
    ...
"We're in this with the U of I Foundation until we find out it's not affordable, and if we found out it's not affordable, then we're not in," Fisher said.

She said the university is also talking with Boise State University and explaining ISU's needs for counseling space, nursing programs, speech pathology and more.
    ...
Fisher said there's no great taxpayer expense because of the project.

"We saw an opportunity and interest rates are at historically all-time lows," she said.
    ...
"If we do well, there will be additional money available from Homeland Security," Fisher said.
