MMC track and field coach Randy Fischer is also excited about the addition.

That man is Randy Fischer.And he's excited for the challenge.

"That's the goal, getting some higher numbers and filling the program," said Fischer, who comes to MMC after two years as an assistant at Dakota State.

Before his time with the DSU Trojans, Fischer won two girls cross country titles at McCook Central (2001, 2002) and also guided West Sioux High School in Iowa to a runner-up finish at the 2003 state meet.

While at these three programs, Fischer played in a major role in increasing their number of athletes.

"Every program I've been at we've seen a spike in numbers," he said."If we have some fun here, good things can happen.That's the motto I've always used."

Fischer attended college at South Dakota State, where he was the captain for the Jackrabbits track program that took second in the national meet in 1974 and 1977.

Fischer also has numerous connections to the Yankton area -- his daughter Heather ran for the Lancers in 2000, and is best friends with USD track coach Dave Gottsleben and YHS cross country coach Dan Fitzsimmons.

"My daughter just loved it there," Fischer said.

With Mount Marty already having signed on to use the new track facility at Yankton High School, Fischer said things are "definitely" improving at MMC.

"The school has some great things going on, especially with the new track complex," he said.

Fischer added, "A lot of credit goes to our assistant coach this year, Lenni Billberg.

She is a quality person and is a very good athlete," said MMC track and field coach Randy Fischer.
