    Professor Finch joined the Stetson faculty in 1982, after practicing law in New England. He teaches Civil Procedure, Appellate Practice, Constitutional Litigation, Conflict of Laws, and Law & Scientific Evidence. He has published extensively, including articles in the Minnesota Law Review, the Wisconsin Law Review, the Ohio State Law Journal, and the Business Lawyer. His work has been cited by numerous federal and state courts, including the United States Supreme Court and the Florida Supreme Court.

    Professor Finch also maintains an active trial consulting and appellate practice. He has handled civil appeals in the Florida state and federal appellate courts. He is a member of the Florida, Connecticut, and Montana bars.

    When not in Florida, Professor Finch and his family like to spend time at their cabin in Madison County, Montana.

    "If you don't have some ... studies suggesting a link, it's awfully hard to win them - unless the company just wants to settle - for it to go away," said Michael Finch, professor of law at Stetson University in St. Petersburg.

    He said the courts would see these cases as speculative.

    "The first plaintiffs to bring the lawsuits have to break the ice," Finch said.The courts prefer that scientists make groundbreaking connections, not the judicial system, he said.

    But one Tampa law firm that defends similar cases says these kinds of suits could be as significant as those by the families who successfully sued cigarette manufacturers for causing lung cancer.
