RIC's Chief Nurse Executive, Laura Ferrio, Appointed to the Illinois Board of Nursing

The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), the first rehabilitation hospital in the country to achieve Magnet status, today announced the appointment of Laura Ferrio, R.N., MSN, MBA, CRRN, vice president of Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive (CNE), to the Illinois Board of Nursing by Illinois Gov.

As one of 13 board members, Ferrio will conduct hearings and disciplinary conferences upon charges calling for discipline of a nursing license and recommend, approve and deny nursing education programs for the state.
"Laura Ferrio is an extremely talented and dedicated professional who has set the standard in rehabilitation nursing through her work at RIC for more than 20 years," said Joanne C. Smith, M.D., president and CEO of RIC.

While serving on the board, Ferrio will retain her duties at RIC overseeing the delivery of quality nursing care to patients and their families.She works directly with clinical and operational leadership to develop and implement advanced treatment programs and ensure consistent, high-quality nursing training requirements and practice standards throughout the RIC system of care.
Additionally, Ferrio has been instrumental in leading the organization's Health Information System (HIS) transition to an advanced, state-of-the- art HIS designed and implemented by a team of RIC clinical care providers and Cerner Corp.
Ferrio earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Northern Illinois University and a dual degree of Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in nursing administration from Chicago's Loyola University.She is also a graduate of the Johnson & Johnson Wharton Fellows Program for Nurse Executives and belongs to the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, the Chicago Metropolitan Nurse Executives and the Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders.She is a founding member of the Illinois Coalition for Nursing Resources, a statewide initiative focused on alleviating the nursing shortage.She joined RIC as a staff nurse in 1986.
