Despite spending millions of pounds on training in health and safety and in the provision of protection for its workforce, the construction industry still has a bad record, Douglas Fergus of Edinburgh & District Master Builders Association told the Scotsman. The targets set in 2001 at the Revitalising Health and Safety summit were designed to drastically improve safety figures. Now, four years later, there are still too many workers on UK construction sites continuing to be killed or injured, said Mr Fergus.
He said: "The targets set at the summit were to cut fatal and major injuries by 40 percent by 2004-05 and 66 percent by 2009-10, cut work-related ill health and also the resultant number of working days lost per 100,000 workers by 20 per ent by 2004-05 and by 50 per cent by 2009-10."
