    Dan M. Fergus, Sr.

    Dan Martin Fergus, Sr. was born August 27, 1925 in Killeen, Bell County, Texas.He died on May 28, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.Funeral services will be conducted at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech St., Abilene, 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2004.On Tuesday evening, the family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange St., Abilene, Texas.Graveside services will be conducted at The Fergus Ranch in Killeen, Texas at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

    Dan was one of three children born to Marvin Van Buren Fergus and Anna Carlton Fergus.

    In 1943, Dan was called to duty during World War II as an infantry machine gunner with the rank of Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 289th Infantry, 75th Division in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.He was wounded on December 26, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart Medal.After returning from the hospital, he participated in the Battle for the Colmar Pocket, the Battle for the Ruhr, and the final attack for Germany.From 1950 to 1954, Dan was a Captain in the Judge Advocate General's United States Air Force.

    Dan attended the University of Texas undergraduate Business School, and was the house manager and member of the Texas RHO Chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity at U.T.He graduated from the University of Texas Law School with a Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1950; which later was changed and he was awarded a Doctor of Jurisprudence.He was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts of the Northern District of Texas in 1951 and later was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.He has been a Texas Bar Foundation Fellow since June 8, 1985, and practiced extensively Oil and Gas Law in Abilene and the surrounding areas.He was well-known for his Oil and Gas Law expertise and was an Oil and Gas lawyer's lawyer.

    In 1950, he began the practice of law in Houston, Texas with the Montieth Law Firm.In 1952 his cousin, Maurice Brooks, a distinguished Abilene attorney, invited Dan to come to Abilene to practice Oil and Gas law.
