Chuck FergusCharles Fergus is a freelance writer living near Lyndonville in the Northeast Kingdom.He writes for a range of magazines and newspapers, including publications as various as the New York Times and Highlights for Children; he is book review editor for Shooting Sportsman.He has had sixteen books published, including Trees of New England: A Natural History.Charles was born and raised in Pennsylvania.There he chaired a town planning commission and watched his home county overtaken by big-box stores, interstate highways, and housing developments.He and his wife Nancy Marie Brown (also a freelance writer) and their son William moved to Vermont in 2003.They live in a remodeled farmhouse, which they heat with wood cut on their own forested acres.Charles enjoys snowshoeing, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding (he and his wife own a pair of Icelandic horses), and laying dry-stone walls.In addition to hunting deer, he pursues grouse and woodcock with spaniels which he trains himself.He has traveled to and written about places as far-flung as the Florida Everglades, Iceland, and the Desert Southwest.
