   "I like it," said Sharon Fender, a counselor at Owen High School who works with seniors seeking college scholarships. "This will put more of an emphasis on writing in the classroom and maybe more on creativity as well.

   "It,ll be interesting to see what it does to SAT scores," Fender said.

   "One thing that is still of concern to me is that the SAT basically sets the admission standard," Fender said. "Any of the (colleges) you go to, they say the first thing we look at is curriculum and the grades and GPA (grade point average) and after that they are looking at SAT and ACT skills. But they will question your SAT score left and right because that is part of their evaluation."
   
   Several scholarships at universities and college across the country rely heavily on SAT scores and essays, Fender said.
   
   "At Wake Forest, the SAT requirement for the Reynolds scholarship is a 1500 and a perfect score is a 1600," Fender said.

   Since more and more colleges required students to submit an essay prior to admission, Owen High and other schools across the state have focused more on teaching essay writing skills in the classroom, Fender said.

   However, now with the new essay, Fender says it could lead to too much of a focus on how to write timed essays in a test-taking environment.
   
   "We run into some dangers that we will suddenly see people offering workshops for $250 on how to write an essay for the SAT," Fender said.
   
   Besides the essay, Fender says another positive change to the SAT is the fact that students who have learning obstacles, such as Attention Deficit Disorder, now may take the SAT with an extended time without colleges knowing they had more time on the test.
   
   "The College Board used to flag scores of a student who has ADD and took the test with a longer extended time, but they were sued and that will not be an issue any longer," Fender said.
