Temperamental weather the past few weeks has prevented St. Peter's Prep tennis coach Fr. John Fencik from getting a real good look at what his players have to offer for the 2007 season.

But Fencik is certain of one thing: the Marauders mean business.

"Our goal, even before we play one match, is to make the postseason," said Fencik during yesterday's practice session at Lincoln Park."That's the only goal."

Pretty routine wish list, especially since St. Peter's has two straight HCIAA championships under its belt. But given the level of competition around Hudson County - Bayonne, Memorial, Emerson, Hudson Catholic are among the usual suspects for high-voltage play - striving for a playoff berth is a reasonable approach.

"Plus, we don't really have too much of an idea of what the talent level is like on the other teams," said Fencik, whose squad lost just four players to graduation and are returning seven regulars."(Yesterday was) the first day we've been able to get outside and have a real long practice so we haven't been able to see what anyone else has or how graduation has affected other teams."

What Prep has, however, is a solid core of returners who comprise the top three single spots and veteran players in first and second doubles.

Vying for the singles positions are James Liggins, senior captain, who "probably has the best serve on the team," according to Fencik.

"The doubles teams are strong and that's where I think we'll earn some points this year," said Fencik.

"(Bayonne) is always tough, they always put together a strong team, so we'll see what happens," said Fencik.

"We have not seen any major enrollment change because of any of the redistricting," said John Fencik, principal at St. Peter's.
