"I put Heather there to take the shot because she has the purest shot of anyone on the team," Buchanan head coach Fred Felty said."She is only a sophomore, and I felt bad about putting her in that position and I know she feels bad about missing it.But, if I had to do it over again, I would pick her again. In the long run, though, I know it is going to pay off and there will come a time when she will be glad I put her in there. We did not lose that game on that (penalty kick)."

Both teams showed a lack of on-field experience but both coaches were happy with how their teams performed technically.

"We are going through some growing pains right now," Felty said."I started five sophomores today so we are young.I can't expect miracles. It just has to come along."

Buchanan head coach Fred Felty credited his midfield with the victory.

We've been working awfully hard on our midfield play for the past week or so , Felty said.

I think tonight and for the last couple of games our midfield has really stepped up and that was the difference..

Buchanan recorded its first confer-ence victory in two tries , outshooting Brandywine , 32-10.

Sean Jesse really played well in the midfield section , Felty said.Sean is not a very big guy but plays really smart and a lot of times gets the ball where we can start an attack and he did that really well tonight..

Buchanan's Chris Cecco also made a difference.
    ...
He's got a natural left foot and he's a scorer , said Felty. He was really excited tonight and played very active. He was wanting the ball and they were getting him the ball..

    ...
Felty had heard the Bobcats had improved and that was one of the things he discussed with his team.

I've heard Brandywine has improved this year , so I really tried to instruct our guys to take the game seriously because I knew and had heard that they have been playing much better ball and that's the way we approach the game..

BUCHANAN -- Buchanan boys soccer coach Fred Felty was at a loss for words.

Buchanan's impressive 6-0 victory over Coloma Wednesday night put the Bucks in the district championship for the 10th straight season -- every year since Felty has become the head coach.

"That's amazing to me," Felty said."I can hardly believe it now that I think about it.I can't put it into words."

    ...
"We wanted to go into the championship game with confidence and we've really been working hard," Felty said."I hope that keeps on going into Saturday."

The Bucks will play No. 9 South Haven, a 2-1 winner over Edwardsburg Wednesday night, for the district championship. The match will start at 11 a.m. at Dowagiac.

Buchanan went ahead 1-0 on a Sater header off a Brandon Godsey throw-in eight minutes into the game.
    ...
Felty, who is 6-3 in district title games, said he was relieved with the performance.

"I was a little worried the way we'd been playing," Felty said."I don't know if it was a lack of focus or what, but we finally got it together."

"We're very fortunate," Buchanan coach Fred Felty said."Things have come together at the right time and the right things have gone our way.We look forward to the challenge of playing for the championship."

    ...
Felty had plenty of praise for his defense, which limited Brandywine to just three shots on goal.

"We kept disrupting their defense and wouldn't let them get anything started," Felty said."Rachelle Weldy has been playing great at stopper. She anticipates the plays in front of her very well. And she has a very good idea of what to do and when to do it.She disrupted Brandywine's offense before they could organize.Rachelle is an aggressive player and a smart player."

    ...
Felty also singled out left side defender Arianna Warmbein.
    ...
"Arianna did a great job of getting control of the ball," Felty said.

"We made a good adjustment," said Buchanan head coach Fred Felty."We talked about it at halftime. We told them what to expect, and then how to play so it wouldn't happen."

With the Buck offensive line pulled back in the second half, their breakaway chances were drastically reduced.

Brandywine (4-8-1, 2-3-1 Lakeland) played with much more intensity after the halftime break.
    ...
Felty was also happy with the way the Buck defense played in the second half, but he thought that his offense could have used a little improvement.

"In the second half, we made some nice runs, but our shots were going right at the goalie," Felty said."We had some good, strong shots, but they were right at the goalie, and the goalie played good."

    ...
Felty would like to work on his offense in preparation for the postseason.

"I want to get some good finishing drills in there, where we take a lot of shots at targets -- not at the goalie, but at targets," said Felty."We need to put that ball where the goalie isn't."
