One of my grad school pals, Craig Felton, now the head of the Art Department of Smith College was finishing his doctorate in New York. He invited me down to attend a New Year's Eve party some friends of his were throwing.

The development of the Mola authorship began (1991) under the early direction of Fred R. Kline (Fred R. Kline Gallery & Kline Art Research Associates, Santa Fe), with the assistance of Dr. Craig Felton (Chairman, Art History, Smith College).
    ...
Kline's first idea had been Ribera, for whom Felton is a leading scholar. Mola authorship was first suggested to Dr. Felton by the late Dr. Robert Manning in 1991, who (along with Eugene Thaw), saw the painting at Nancy Krieg's studio.
    ...
The attribution has been verbally upheld to Dr. Felton (based on study of transparencies) by Sir Denis Mahon (Independent Scholar, London) and Dr. Michael Helston (National Gallery, London), and to Mr. Kline by Dr. Keith Christiansen (Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1998) and most recently and enthusiastically by Mola scholar Dr. Dawson Carr (J. Paul Getty Museum, 1998).

Saturday, March 15, 2003 -- UNTIL his wirehaired fox terrier, Willa, died last year, Smith College art professor Craig Felton rose early each Sunday to walk with his dog from their South Main Street home in Sunderland to buy The New York Times at the neighborhood store.

    ...
Stopping to chat, Oinonen told Felton about a book soon to be on the auction block that contained what looked like a drawing by an old master.
    ...
Felton arranged to look at the drawing with Ann Sievers of the Smith College Museum of Art.
    ...
What they saw astounded them, said Felton.

    ...
Felton and Sievers attended the auction, with museum funds and money from the college's Mortimer Rare Book Room in hand.
    ...
Unfortunately, a New York City dealer was there and the bidding went a good deal higher than Felton and Sievers would have liked.
    ...
"We were like two nervous kids," said Felton. "It was a wonderfully joyous moment."

Although most are not as colorful as that one, there are stories behind all of the 25,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, artifacts and other art objects in the museum's collection.

In the two years the museum has been closed as part of the $35 million renovation of the college's newly named Brown Fine Arts Center, museum staff has increased the collection by about 600 items.

    ...
Signed and dated by the artist, the 6-by-7-foot painting incorporates a variety of stylistic influences, including that of Flemish baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens and French classicist Nicolas Poussin, said Craig Felton, who advised the museum on the purchase.
