   Under center that day in El Paso, Texas, was Rockey Felker, who was instrumental in leading MSU to the come-from-behind victory.
   
   And for the first time since that 9-3 campaign that concluded with a national ranking of No. 18, Felker is back with a MSU team preparing for bowl.
   
   Now an assistant under Sylvester Croom, Felker fondly recalls that 1974 showdown with the Tar Heels, when the Bulldogs rushed for 455 yards, a record that continues to stand today.
   
   And as Mississippi State prepares for its Liberty Bowl matchup with Central Florida on Saturday, Felker sees a lot of similarities with the fan's excitement from the 1974 and 2007 teams.
   
   "I remember how excited the Mississippi State fans were, like they are today," he said following Wednesday's practice at Rhodes College.

   Felker, who now oversees the running backs, said he still has people come up and talk to him about the that game and the excitement it generated.Now, though, those same conversations continue with this year's bowl bid.
   
   "It was a special year then, and it's a special now," he said."Hopefully Saturday we can go out and end the season like we did then."
   
   And he hopes this year's success parlays into more for a sustained period of time.

   Rockey Felker, former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks football team, was at the game.
   
   Felker was recently hired as the director of football operations at MSU.
   
   Before joining the Arkansas staff, Felker was head coach of the Bulldogs.
   
   Most recently he has been in the insurance business in Fayetteville.
   
   The Dean
