Susan Feldman, technical director of the Salt Institute in Alexandria, Va., said the salt industry recommends using as little salt as possible.

"The salt industry, through the Salt Institute, recommends that departments of transportation and municipalities practice ‘sensible salting' techniques, which limits the possibility of oversalting our roads and highways," she said."We all desire a clear pavement to protect the traveling public from potential weather-related accidents and to ensure that emergency vehicles can safely navigate our thoroughfares and commerce is allowed to proceed to keep our economy moving, but there is no need to overuse de-icing salt, which might contribute to groundwater pollution."

Feldman says the amount washed off cars is "really insignificant."

"The consumer can rest assured that these facilities are subject to strict governmental regulations to contain any accumulated contaminants," she said.
    ...
"This issue of accumulated salt runoff has been investigated, researched and controlled to prevent excess contamination of our nation's water resources," Feldman said.

"It's the original flavor enhancer, used thousands of years before MSG or its cousins ever were involved," says Susan Feldman, technical director for the Salt Institute, Alexandria, Va. "There is no solid scientific evidence for the reduction of dietary salt in healthy adults and, as a flavoring substitute for MSG, salt is a well-proven alternative."

Nationally, sales last year increased in every market segment except winter roadway maintenance, said Susan Feldman, spokeswoman for the Alexandria, Va.-based Salt Institute, a nonprofit trade association of salt producers founded in 1914.

The Salt Institute reported that (dry) salt sales nationally reached $1.3 billion in 2004, just slightly below the all-time record set in 2003.

Sales of food salt, animal nutrition salt and salt for the water-conditioning and chemicals industry all registered gains last year, Feldman said.

"If we hadn't seen a decline in highway sales due to the moderate winter compared with 2003 we probably would have set a new sales record," she said.
