Metal fragments come off the tracks , wheels or brakes and lands in the brush causing fires , said Ron Feldman , a fire engineer for San Bernardino County's Phelan station.
The friction from the steel wheels on the steel tracks causes a lot of heat , Feldman said.
The tracks going through Phelan are not heavily used. Most trains stay closer to Interstate 15 , but a train-related fire could happen in the area , Feldman said.
It's a legitimate concern anywhere the railroad is near heavy brush , Feldman said.
The railroads try to keep the brush along the tracks cleared , but sometimes the fragments get past the clearing , Feldman said. -

The boy suffered a 3-inch cut to his forehead and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center by helicopter, San Bernardino County Fire Capt. Ron Feldman said. The child, whose name was not released, was later released from the hospital after doctors sewed up his head wound with about 25 stitches. According to dispatch logs, the boy's parents reported that the dog had attacked another child. The parents also reported that they destroyed the animal Thursday. San Bernardino County Animal Control officials did not return repeated phone calls seeking information about the dog attack.
