Margaret Feiss was born in 1909, in Santa Cruz, California.Her father was a lumberman who had moved from Michigan to Yakima, Washington, where he spotted and fell in love with Peg's mother.When his brother moved to Santa Cruz to build a lumber mill, Peg's father and mother went, too.

Peg, an only child, started school in Santa Cruz, also attended school in Yakima when they went back for a while, and then in Portland, where she graduated from Jefferson High School.She had a wonderful English teacher at Jefferson who instilled in her a love of books.After she graduated, the family moved back to Santa Cruz, and Peg attended San Jose State College for three years, earning a teaching certificate in 1929.With the onset of the Depression, jobs were scarce, although her father always managed to find work in the lumber industry.

Peg boiled diapers on the wood stove, and twice a month took sheets and towels to a friend in Prairie City who had a washing machine.There she also bought groceries.

Peg enjoys a little gardening and was a long-time member of the Eugene Garden Club and Catholic Daughters.In 1974 and '75 she was active in Harmony House, and while her boys were young, she worked with the cub scouts.She has been an avid reader and recently enjoyed a biography of Wallace Stegner.Besides biographies, she likes an occasional mystery.
