But as Provost Geoffrey Feiss stated, "In the legislation the state decided that if we're going to give the universities some flexibilities and the ability to do some things on their own, we want something in return."
    ...
Provost Feiss explained, "Those aren't the only things we want to do but it's what the state wants us to report on."
    ...
Therefore the solution to this financial situation, as acknowledged by both President Nichol and Provost Feiss, is the inevitable increase in tuition.

WILLIAMSBURG - - After more than a decade of service to the College of William and Mary, Provost P. Geoffrey Feiss is headed for the hills - the hills of Colorado, that is.

When Feiss, 66, retires from the university Tuesday, he plans to move to the woods of Fort Collins, Colo., into a cabin he built with his wife, Nancy West, and return to his first love, geology.

"I've always loved collecting artifacts of the earth, and now I'll get to do it as often as I'd like," said Feiss, who will live about an hour from Denver.

For the past 12 years, Feiss has had to put his love for rocks on the back burner while working as William and Mary's chief academic and budget officer, basically supervising day-to-day operations and planning for the university's future.

He also oversaw research activities on campus, undergraduate admissions, the registrar's office and the university's chief information officer, said Brian Whitson, university spokesman. For Feiss, his mission was simple.

"I'm responsible for seeing to it that William and Mary delivers on the instructional promises we've made to our students."

Feiss started at William and Mary in 1997 as the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences after serving as senior associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina. He was promoted to his current position six years ago after former Provost Gillian Cell retired.

Before assuming administrative roles, Feiss was an active geology researcher and professor at UNC and Harvard University.

Feiss, who keeps many of his geological finds in his Brafferton House office on campus, said he's missed working in the geology field over the past decade but has enjoyed the impact he's made in the operation of the university as provost. During his tenure, Feiss said the university was able to attract and retain good faculty, make progress in diversifying William and Mary's student body and get undergraduate students more involved in research.

Feiss was also involved in the creation of the university's Lemon Project, a long-term research project named after a former William and Mary slave to chronicle the life and history of blacks at the university and greater Williamsburg.

Feiss said he's been successful at his job because the university has good faculty and staff members.

"My job is not to have great ideas, but to pick them," he said.

Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Dennis Manos said Feiss has had enormous impact on the university.

"He's one of the most intellectual people that I know," Manos said. "I'm looking forward to working with the new provost, but I will definitely miss Provost Feiss."
