Dora Fang is opening new markets in China.

On a fast track in China

She loves fine dining, theater, live music, and Chi Omega. And she adores motorcycles, four-wheel drive vehicles, road racing, go-karts, and all-terrain vehicles.Such is the yin and yang of Dora Fang who, while on her first visit to mainland China during Christmas 2006, decided she would return to the land of her ancestors for a longer, open-ended tour.

A motor-sports maven with an affinity for and background in vehicle sales and marketing strategy, Dora had little trouble finding the right business opportunity to make it happen.Four months after returning from her trip to China, she was settled in a luxury high-rise apartment in the central business district of Beijing and employed by Automotive Marketing Consultants, Inc. to develop the China market and to manage their biggest China account, Mercedes-Benz.It didn't hurt that she is more motor-savvy than most men, speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, and understands how the Chinese think.Easily tagging Dora as a foreigner, however, are her mannerisms, choice of words, and a personality that is more outgoing and aggressive than that of the local Chinese.

Dora grew up in Lubbock, Texas, the only child of Chinese immigrants and was a self-described "frilly-frou-frou girl."While at Duke University, she enjoyed being part of Mu Kappa Chapter and was a chapter officer.Through the years, her commitment to the Fraternity has been deep and unwavering: She was part of the leadership of and active in the Washington DC, Chicago, and Milwaukee alumnae groups and an advisor to Xi Chapter at Northwestern University.

Right after college, she bought a new red Jeep Cherokee and, on a whim, signed up for a Jeep Jamboree weekend outing.Even though she got stuck in mud and swamp water filled the cab of her vehicle, she enjoyed the fun and friendship of four-wheeling.She was hooked and was soon going "jeepin" several weekends a month. It wasn't long before she had a highly customized and lifted vehicle, and founded a training and outfitting company called Adventure 4WD.For years she led tours and taught off-road driving courses from Utah's Moab Desert to boulder fields in Indiana's Badlands.Once, Ford Motor Company paid her to introduce a new member of its Land Rover engineering team to off-road driving and aftermarket vehicle modifications.

Business was great in 2003 when Dora decided to pack it in to enroll at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University to learn how to take it to another level.Graduating in 2005 with a master's degree, she entered a fast-track leadership program at Harley-Davidson Motor Company. After working on China market entry from the corporate side and the restructuring of the North American sales organization, she knew she wanted to be where the action was: in the China automotive market. She downsized her personal fleet of seven vehicles (including four street motorcycles, one race bike, and two highly customized Jeeps) and shipped her Labrador retriever to her parents' house to prepare for her overseas adventure.

Today, Dora markets luxury automobiles in China's exploding personal-car market in which domestic automakers can barely keep up with the double-digit growth and the infrastructure is crumbling as 1,000 new cars are added to Beijing's streets daily."Traffic jams and the smog are really awful," she says.

"People are purchasing cars for the first time for personal enjoyment," Dora explains.
    ...
What fascinates Dora most about China?"The change from communism to a raging capitalist system," she replies."It's rapid but filled with potholes."For example, she must carry her passport at all times and must show it to purchase pre-paid cell-phone minutes, check in at a hotel, or pay her electric bill."This is a cash society," she says.

Few people have fallen harder for the world of four-wheeling fun than Dora Fang.In fact, it eventually turned into such a passion for her that the Chicago denizen decided to start her own business.Today, Let's Go Jeepin' introduces others to the pleasures of four-wheeling by teaching basic driving and recovery skills, as well as leading trail rides throughout the Midwest that cater to a variety of skill levels.

Even though she just bought a '97 TJ, Dora does most of her four-wheeling in her '97 Cherokee Sport, appropriately labeled JEEP CHK.One of her first modifications was installing a Skyjacker 8-inch Rock Ready lift.Combined with BFGoodrich 33x12.50 Mud-Terrains and fender flares that have been trimmed 2 inches, she gets plenty of ground clearance and wheel travel.

    ...
With 8 inches of lift, Dora decided to use CV driveshafts front and rear from Tom Wood to avoid any binding or vibration problems.
    ...
For occasions when deep water crossings have to be tackled, Dora also installed a Safari snorkel. The stock AW4 tranny and NV231 T-case continue to serve her purposes just fine, although the 231 has been upgraded with a slip-yoke eliminator kit from JB Conversions.

The front and rear bumpers, including the swing-out tire carrier, were built by Custom 4x4 Fabrication.Up front, the custom mount holds a Warn XD9000i winch equipped with yellow rope from Master Pull.Providing increased protection is a gas tank skidplate from Mopar Performance and rocker guards from All J Products.

Inside, the Cherokee has been outfitted with some of the latest electronics for communicating in the backcountry.Dora runs a Garmin III+ GPS unit and a Cobra CB to keep in touch while in the Midwestern outback and then lead her group back out again. At the rear of the XJ is a CO2-filled PowerTank, a tool that is becoming increasingly popular with those who don't want to rely on a compressor for airing up tires or running air tools.

Dora tells us that she's developed a real respect for the four-wheeling capabilities of long-wheelbase vehicles such as the Cherokee, and with everything she's done with her XJ, we can see why.

The Skyjacker 8-inch Rock Ready kit gives Dora plenty of lift.To avoid any binding problems, she installed CV shafts front and rear from Tom Wood.

Warn's XD9000i winch is well protected in this Custom 4x4 Fabrication bumper. The matching yellow rope came courtesy of Master Pull.

Dora runs BFG 33x12.50 Mud-Terrains on 15x8 Tyrant wheels from American Racing.

A4WD is a small business solely owned by Dora Fang.In 1999, we partnered with the Badlands Off-Road Park in Attica, Indiana to offer 4x4 sport utility owners in the Midwest a fun, safe, and effective way to learn about their vehicle, understand trail safety and etiquette, and develop better driving skills.Developments have included the addition of parts and recovery gear sales in the 2000 season, and the addition of intermediate level and adventure outings in the 2001 season.Since late 2001, A4WD has primarily focused on the vehicle outfitting business. In August 2003, Dora moved the business to Hanover, New Hampshire where she is pursuing a Masters in Business Administration at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

Adventure 4WD has been written up in 4 Wheel Drive and Sport Utility, the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Magazine, Road and Track's Open Road, Travel Holiday, Crain's Chicago Business, United Four Wheel Drive Association's Voice, jeepwire.com, jjournal.net, moab-offroad.com, truckworld.com, and more!

Dora is a certified Chief Instructor for United Four Wheel Drive and is certified by the American Red Cross and Wilderness Medical Associations in First Aid, CPR, and Wilderness First Aid.She drives a 2001 Solar Yellow JeepĀ® Cherokee and went four wheeling for the first time at the Pine Barrens JeepĀ® Jamboree a few years ago with tow hooks (only because they were mandatory on the trip, they were installed the night before she left for the trip) and a tow strap. The event was the most fun she could remember having in many years, even though she submerged her then brand new 1997 Cherokee in water up to the hood! The camaraderie and fun she had with the people she met changed her life.

Upon returning to Washington, DC, she met some experienced jeepers at a parts store who took her under their wing and taught her basic four wheeling skills (thanks George and JR!).That summer, every other weekend was spent throughout the backcountry of Maryland and Virginia. She joined a four wheel drive club, signed on to a few email lists, and the rest is history!

To date, she has been four wheeling in Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Utah, Colorado, Missouri, and Kentucky. On her wish list of place to go are the Las Cruces, New Mexico, Rubicon Trail in California, the mountains in Colorado, and Tellico near Murphy, North Carolina. She stays active and involved in the following clubs, organizations, lists, and forums:

Finally, I met Dora Fang of Adventure 4WD at the Northwoods Jeep Jamboree in September 2001.She talked with me for a while and gave me some great ideas.Eight months later, we got together and she worked to get me the best product, installed by a certified mechanic who works for a Jeep dealership, and most of all, done "MY WAY!"With a lot of work, patience, and phone calls, it was finally done.Dora and Adventure 4WD will be my number one source for parts and advice. She has excellent customer service, prices that can't be beat, and lots of Jeep knowledge. If she doesn't have the answer right away, she admits it, and works very hard to find the correct information before she answers.
    ...
In dealing with Dora at Adventure 4WD, you will find three very important factors: Courtesy, Reliability and Professionalism. Her dedication to her customers is unwavering. You will always be treated with patience and understanding. She has been very helpful to me with regards to all the questions that I had concerning my Jeep and aftermarket parts. This helpfulness has been very instrumental in my decision making process. So with this in mind I will always be happy to take my purchases to Dora at Adventure 4WD.
    ...
One such person was Dora Fang of Adventure 4WD fame. Her patience and professionalism with questions that previously must have been asked a few hundred times, was impeccable.Always offering advice, tips and techniques without one hint of compensation. So when time came to make the purchases, I thought it would only be right to direct them to the person that had been so instrumental in providing me with the proper information.

I can earnestly say that all of my purchasing experiences with Dora @ Adventure 4WD have been nothing short of excellent. Her customer service is just outstanding, because she truly loves all things 4x4.So her level of dedication is so much higher in contrast to some of the mega mail-order businesses.
    ...
"I was a little uneasy at first with my driving skills, but Dora and Nicholaus coached us through"

Last spring, on a New Hampshire farm, Dora Fang cruised through a thin stand of pine trees in her souped-up, white Jeep Wrangler.Driving in a caravan of ten off-road vehicles, she followed a blue Ford Bronco to a muddy clearing strewn with boulders nearly as round as she is tall (five feet five). She slowed to a crawl and began carefully navigating her Jeep's oversized tires onto the rocks. The idea, she explains later, is to place your tires precisely, the way you would your feet if you were crossing a creek on stepping-stones.

"In the type of driving I like to do," she says, "where you put your tire, what angle you go up a rock on, whether you go two inches to the left, two inches to the right, or straight on, makes a difference."

The difference was obvious by the end of the six-hour, two-mile tour.

"I had these huge rigs all around me," Fang says, "and they all broke"--except hers.

Fang has been surviving--and often leading--in the male-dominated world of off-road driving for seven years. The founder and owner of Adventure 4WD Inc., she has led tours and taught off-road driving courses from the Moab Desert in Utah to boulder fields in Indiana's Badlands. At the peak of her business in 2002, she generated some $200,000 in revenue from guided trips and from sales of parts like skid plates and winches.Once, Ford paid her to introduce a new member of its Land Rover engineering team to the SUV's off-road capabilities.

Eventually, Fang says, Adventure 4WD's growth outpaced her ability to learn business skills on the job.So, last year, she decided to scale back the company and enroll at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business. But she still serves her loyal customers and joins in outings with a local Jeep club, North East Willys Jeeps Organization (www.newjo.org).

    Dora J. Fang '96

Fang grew up in Lubbock, Texas, the only child of Chinese immigrants and a self-described "frilly-frou-frou girl."Even as a public-policy major at Duke, she says she was a "have-to-have-a-hair-dryer-to-go-outside" sorority girl (Chi Omega).

That all changed a year after she graduated. She bought a new red Jeep Cherokee, and, on a whim, signed up for a Jeep Jamboree weekend outing in New Jersey's Pine Barrens.Even though she got stuck in three feet of mud, she enjoyed the adventure and camaraderie. She was hooked.

Soon, she had a CB handle ("Dor-able"), a vanity plate ("JEEP CHK" for "Jeep Chick"), a name for her increasingly customized SUV ("Thrasher"), and a business (Let's Go Jeepin', later renamed Adventure 4WD).

Despite the occupational perils of off-roading, Fang's only serious accident came when she was returning from an expedition in Moab. She was following a friend along a remote mountain road in Colorado, when the road gave way.

"I remember arching toward upside down," Fang says, "and that's it."She came to in a rocky ravine thirty feet below the road--still in the SUV, right side up, facing in the same direction, with the engine still running. The Jeep's roof, undercarriage, and four sides were seriously damaged, she says, and the beef jerky and tortillas previously on the passenger seat were beneath a toolbox in the rear hatch. She walked away with only cuts, bruises, and a fractured rib.

Accidents are the exception, Fang says.Don't be deterred.

"You didn't buy a sport-utility vehicle just to drive it on the street," she says.
