BUENA VISTA -- For an award based on kindness and charity, Daniel S. Falasca makes a perfect candidate.

The Augustinians of St. Augustine Prep each year award the Gregor Mendel Award to someone who makes great contributions to his or her community.
On Thursday evening, Falasca became the 36th recipient.
"I am truly honored to receive the Gregor Mendel Award and to be placed on the prestigious list of past honorees," Falasca said.
"I worked hard, fulfilled my dreams and that is the best that can happen to any man."
Falasca, 66, started D. Falasca Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Inc. in 1969.
Over the years, he grew the business from a small plumbing company with three employees to an established commercial mechanical contracting business with more than 50 workers.
In 1982, he moved the business to the Vineland Industrial Park, renamed it Falasca Mechanical, and welcomed 150 employees.
Beyond his accomplishments in the plumbing industry, Falasca also serves as trustee for the Pipe Trades Pension Fund, director of Capital Bank and president for the South Jersey Mechanical Contractors Association.
Falasca often gives to local organizations, schools, and charities, including the American Cancer Society and the National Lupus Foundation.
He is also a founding member of the Italian-American Benevolent Association.

He is a true family man and we're honored to have him as the 2009 Gregor Mendel winner," he said.
