Janice Fain, director of purchasing and design for Bluegreen Resorts in Knoxville, Tenn., said it's a good idea to work with the homeowners association.

Hurricanes impacted the 2004 renovation of the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Regency. The work was planned on a floor-by-floor basis, but the entire building ended up having to be closed to complete the work. (before, and after)

"Make sure everyone is on the same page as to what is actually being refurbished, especially when you are dealing with a large homeowners association board," Fain said.
