John V. Fahy , MD , is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the Department of Medicine , University of California , San Francisco. He is also an Investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF.He is a medical graduate of University College Dublin , Ireland , and he came to the United States in 1989 for postgraduate training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He has been a faculty member at UCSF since 1993.His fellowship training with Homer A. Boushey provided him with a rich experience in clinical studies of disease mechanism in asthma and of early phase clinical trials of novel asthma treatments. In addition , his research collaborations with Jay Nadel and Carol Basbaum at UCSF during and after fellowship heightened his curiosity about mechanisms of mucus hypersecretion in airway diseases. To enable study of disease mechanism of mucus hypersecretion , Dr Fahy's laboratory has focused much of its efforts on establishing research methods applicable in humans , including validation studies of sputum induction , immunoassays for mucins in airway secretions , and application of unbiased stereology as a method of quantitative microscopy in bronchial biopsies. In addition , he has established a research partnership with Gregory Dolganov , Ph.D. initially for the purposes of examining mucin gene expression in the airway but more recently for the wider goal of high throughput , TaqMan based , gene profiling in airway epithelial cells and other airway tissues. In his presentation Dr Fahy will discuss his recent research on goblet cell and mucin gene abnormalities in asthma.
