A display so finger-friendly suits adults, too, said Jessica Fagan, council spokeswoman.

The council keeps a compact-disc player handy, for young and old,to present the songs that match the books.

To drive home the welcoming atmosphere, Fagan said, the council has created a clever guide, which asks children to answer the question "What is a book?"

After the April 30 concert at Coffman, a lot of people were disappointed because tickets were sold out quickly and several hundred people had to be turned away, said Jessica Fagan, spokesperson for the Dublin Arts Council, one of the sponsors of the taiko project.

The sold-out "Drumbeats of Taiko" concert featuring performances by the Davis students, Capital University students, Ohio music educators and world-renowned Japanese taiko drummer Eitetsu Hayashi is now airing on Time Warner Cable Local On Demand Channel 1111.

"My kids are so excited," Hubbell said."One of them said he felt like a celebrity because he was 'on-demand.'"

The April 30 concert can be viewed by Time Warner Digital Cable customers at no additional cost, Fagan said.

"It's hard to believe (the festival is 10 years old)," said Jessica Fagan, spokeswoman for the DAC."It started out as a much smaller event."

The original intent of the arts council, according to Fagan, was to feature a different culture each year in festival form.

However, the response to the event was "so positive" after the first year, Fagan said the DAC "decided to keep that as a focus."

It is estimated that up to 7,000 people will attend this year's festival.

Fagan said all of the workshops, demonstrations and activities are free save for people who decorate ceramic rice bowls.

"I don't know if it will return next year," said Jessica Fagan, a spokeswoman for the DAC.

Last year, Fagan said about 5,000 people attended the festival at Dublin Scioto High School.

"We just feel like it's a really important program," Fagan said."DAC has dedicated itself deeply to this important project, both in terms of staff and financial resources."

The Japan festival might not be the only change the DAC makes to its list of programs this year.

"We're at a place where we are evaluating all of our programs to see how they benefit the community," Fagan said.

While the DAC recently hired a new executive director, David Guion, Fagan said the timing of the festival announcement and the program evaluation are coincidental.
