Ora Ewing, 52, a principal in MPS since 1991 and principal of Green Bay Avenue Elementary School, 3872 N. 8th St., since 1999, began the five-day suspension on Monday, Assistant District Attorney Patti Wabitsch said in a letter to the attorney for the mother of the child.
...
Don Hoffman, spokesman for MPS, confirmed that Ewing was not on the job this week but declined to disclose any details because the case involved a personnel matter.
...
Ewing had earlier been suspended for three days with pay while the allegation was being investigated, but she had returned to work while MPS officials considered how to handle the case.
According to a police report of the April 11 incident, a 7-year-old boy said Ewing pulled down his pants and spanked him once with an open hand.
The boy's mother and her attorney, Alan D. Eisenberg, sought to have Ewing charged with assaulting the boy, but prosecutors declined on April 24 and again on May 3 to charge her.
...
In a letter dated May 3, Wabitsch said, "I have taken into consideration the fact that Ms. Ewing received a 5 day suspension from her job without pay that will be served next week and that a reprimand was placed in her permanent file."
...
Ewing was hired as a teacher for MPS in 1973 and became an assistant principal in 1989.She was promoted to principal in 1991, serving at Phillis Wheatley Elementary, 2442 N. 20th St., until she was transferred to Green Bay Avenue in 1999.
Ewing did not respond to an earlier request for comment on the allegation and could not be reached for comment Monday.
