On the eve of the match, Brothers coach Troy Evans asserted that the Sharks didnt rate as the biggest threat to his team for the premiership, and those headlines were pinned to the Souths dressing-shed wall.
    ...
After losing only one match so far this season, Brothers coach Troy Evans rated it as a "fair win".

"It was very entertaining in the first half, we dropped off a bit in the second," Evans said.

DEFENDING champions Souths are second on the Mercury Cup ladder but Brothers coach Troy Evans doesn't rate the Sharks as the main threat to his team's premiership quest."Souths have been too inconsistent this season," he said in the lead-up to tomorrow's top-of-the-table blockbuster between the two sides at Shark Park. His view of the Sharks outfit stems from their less than imposing 8-5 win loss record and a topsy-turvy form guide.
    ...
"It'll be a close game but we're going through a bit of an injury campaign at the moment," Evans said after flyer Keegan Beikoff and playmaker Ryan Scott were also forced out of action.

BROTHERS coach Troy Evans refuses to believe the absence of the unpredictable Barba brothers cost his side any chance of victory at Moranbah on Saturday night when his side slumped to their first loss of the season.
    ...
But Evans said his team did not have to rely on the boom youngster for victories.

"Even if he had been there it wouldnt have changed (the result)," he said after his team succumbed 40-20 to the Miners.
    ...
"You can blame a lot of things but at the end of the day it's the players that have to take responsibility for the loss," Evans said.

"We were awful from the get-go."

He said he had "no doubt" his troops were complacent after stringing so many wins together and was almost grateful for the loss to come at this stage of the season rather than at the back-end when it could prove more costly.

"It's probably a loss we had to have and now the monkey's off our back," Evans said before praising the Miners efforts on home soil.

"Moranbah played very well. They've been an outstanding team in this competition for years and we expect them to be there at the end of this season too," he said of the Miners side which secured a much-needed win to keep them in the finals hunt.

"Any team in this competition can beat you on their day and it (the loss) showed us that we have to do the hard yards each week," Evans continued.

    Brothers coach Troy Evans agreed.

"For him to be man of the match in Foley Shield and miss selection for North Queensland is a bit of a farce," Evans said.

The Brothers club is ecstatic their star player's potential has been recognised by the Bulldogs.

"It's fantastic news for him.He deserves it," said Evans.

"I think he's the standout player in the competition at the moment."

Evans said there was no doubt Barba's opportunity was a big loss for Brothers.

"Full credit to Norths," Brothers coach Troy Evans said.

"They played a great game and could be definitely considered as premiership contenders."

Evans said the Devils could be grand finalists "without a doubt", after watching them fight back in the dying stages of the match.

BROTHERS coach Troy Evans reckons it was "probably the worst 80 minutes of football we've played," but his side still managed to conjure up a tense 24-20 victory over reigning premiers Souths at Leprechaun Park on Saturday.

Evans was disappointed with his side's lack of composure with the ball - a couple of individual pieces of brilliance proving the difference between the two sides.

"I think we were lucky to get away with that one," Evans said.

"We gave them enough ammunition to win a game of football but they didn't capitalise on it which is good for us."But he couldn't question the commitment of his players who maintained their unbeaten run this season, snaring a seventh win from as many starts.

"We tried hard but it was a bad night I think ... hopefully, that's our bad game for the year," he said

His side was forced to come from behind after Souths went to a 16-12 lead 15 minutes into the second half.

Brothers recorded a last-start 52-12 demolition of Whitsunday but coach Troy Evans believes his team is still yet to gel.

"We won eight straight at the start of last season so we're not doing any better than then," he said of 2006 when the team eventually finished third.

"We struggled up to half time to get any fluency in our game against Proserpine. We've got a lot of improving to do before we're a threat for the premiership this year."

And he has been forced to make some changes of his own.Evans will use winger Brendan Russell or reserve grade fullback Judd Dylan to replace dynamic fullback Ben Barba.
    ...
And Evans believes his halves pairing of Guya Nuna and Tom Heggie has yet to hit their straps with regular pivot Ryan Scott still about three weeks away from returning from a broken hand suffered in the side's last hit-out against Souths.

But coach Troy Evans has refused to let the victory get the better of his men and is urging his side to lift again for tomorrow's encounter with Magpies at Leprechaun Park. And although his side will take deserved favouritism into the match, he expects his players to find something extra to accommodate the loss of several key players, including key ball-player Ryan Scott.

The wily five-eighth was a central figure for Evans' season plans but a broken wrist suffered against the Sharks has forced a reshuffle in the playing ranks."We'll miss him, there's no doubt about that," Evans said."But Tom Hegarty played at five-eighth for us early last season and he should be right to fill in." With boom back-rower Ben Potter and centre Sam Granville suspended, Evans will need to fill voids elsewhere on the field.
    ...
"We've got a few blokes missing with injuries and suspension, so it'll be an interesting game for us," Evans said before suggesting his charges would still be a force to reckon with.
    ...
So, Evans was unsure what the Pies would be capable of come tomorrow.
    ...
"We've struggled in the past (to draw a crowd) but we've now gathered quite a bit of support now that we're winning," Evans said.

BROTHERS coach Troy Evans has labelled the Mackay and District Rugby League's decision to schedule its Mercury Cup matches on the same weekend as a Foley Shield encounter as "a joke."Evans has five of his players in the Mackay side which is travelling to Ayr to tackle Townsville tonight and he's expecting them to be worn out for a top-of-the-table clash with defending premiers Souths at Shark Park tomorrow."It's just poor planning by the league - it's a joke," he said.
    ...
"There are a lot of players who are expected to play their second game of footy in less than 24 hours," Evans said."It's a bit much to expect the players to back up."And Evans said he's expecting his side to be worse off than Souths come tomorrow afternoon.
