(February 2, 2004) - LYONS - Andrea Evangelist didn't quite realize how much work she was getting into when she accepted the executive director position at the Wayne County Historical Society six years ago.
When she received a newsletter indicating that the society was looking for a part-time director, Evangelist figured the job might be something fun and interesting.
"I knew it would really be full time, but my girlfriend… really started on me saying: ‘You should do it, you should do it,'" Evangelist said.
Prior to becoming the society's executive director, Evangelist was a member and even worked there for a few months while in between jobs. She expects to resign from her position no later than June 1 after six years in the position.
She'd planned on working no more than two years but quickly realized there was no way she could finish all that needed to be done in just two years.
"I thought three years (would be enough)," she said."Then I just lost track of time and then it was like: ‘I've been there six years?'"
In those six years, Evangelist has accomplished a great deal.

During her tenure, Evangelist was able to organize the society's files, develop and run various classes for the public and organize exhibits in the Old Jail Museum.

In 2003, the museum had more than 8,000 visitors, Evangelist said.In 1998, the year she began as executive director, the museum had about 1,500 visitors.
Now that she'll have some time to herself, Evangelist said she plans to relax, although she hopes to begin volunteering again within a year.
"I want to do pottery, I want to take a class in watercolor, I want to play," she said.
