Cemetery art to be topic - 3/11/02 - [Cached Version]

The speaker will be Andrea Evangelist, Executive Director of the Society, who will talk on Cemetery Art and Symbolism.

Family research is an engrossing pastime that often starts out small and then becomes all-consuming.The reason for this might be that this is one hobby that gives the average person a chance to become a detective. The research involved in tracing ones' roots eventually leads to cemetery visits and headstone reading.

As more and more researchers venture into cemeteries to seek out ancestral graves, more and more questions arise about the meanings of the artwork and symbols found on the tombstones.Evangelist will explain the meanings behind frequently-seen cemetery symbols.

The lecture will begin at 12:10 p.m. and attendees may bring a bag lunch if desired.Beverages will be provided by Zappia Vending, Inc. and dessert will be provided by the Society.Registration for this free event is required, as seating space is limited.

'After decades of faithful service, our three mannequins have to be retired from exhibit life,' says Director Andrea Evangelist.

'The male mannequin is missing an arm, the little girl is missing one hand and all the fingers on the remaining hand, and the female mannequin has had her fingers reglued and repainted so many times that she is beginning to look arthritic,' Evangelist said.

Mannequins are used at the Museum to model uniforms and all styles of period clothing. The Society is in need of mannequins of either gender, and could also use dress forms.Since the Wayne County Historical Society is a not-for-profit agency, any donations would be tax-deductible.

Democrat & Chronicle: Wayne historical society head... - [Cached Version]
Published on: 2/2/2004    Last Visited: 2/2/2004

(February 2, 2004) - LYONS - Andrea Evangelist didn't quite realize how much work she was getting into when she accepted the executive director position at the Wayne County Historical Society six years ago.

When she received a newsletter indicating that the society was looking for a part-time director, Evangelist figured the job might be something fun and interesting.

"I knew it would really be full time, but my girlfriend… really started on me saying: ‘You should do it, you should do it,'" Evangelist said.

Prior to becoming the society's executive director, Evangelist was a member and even worked there for a few months while in between jobs. She expects to resign from her position no later than June 1 after six years in the position.

She'd planned on working no more than two years but quickly realized there was no way she could finish all that needed to be done in just two years.

"I thought three years (would be enough)," she said."Then I just lost track of time and then it was like: ‘I've been there six years?'"

In those six years, Evangelist has accomplished a great deal.
    ...
During her tenure, Evangelist was able to organize the society's files, develop and run various classes for the public and organize exhibits in the Old Jail Museum.
    ...
In 2003, the museum had more than 8,000 visitors, Evangelist said.In 1998, the year she began as executive director, the museum had about 1,500 visitors.

Now that she'll have some time to herself, Evangelist said she plans to relax, although she hopes to begin volunteering again within a year.

"I want to do pottery, I want to take a class in watercolor, I want to play," she said.
