According to an article in The Vermont Phoenix printed in 1895, land now known as Crowell Park was bought by James B. Eustis, who had served as an ambassador to France, and was a U.S. senator from Louisiana.
The purchase included 14 acres, some of which was pastured land. Eustis improved the house on the property which had been built as a summer estate, and lived there with his wife.
In 1860, Eustis deeded a two-thirds interest in the property to H.S. Buckner, his father-in-law, who resided in New Orleans.
