"It's pretty scary, if you look around, to think we'll be ready to open in a few weeks," said Ed Eusebio, senior director of school facilities for the Dixon Unified School District."It's amazing what can happen in one day."

Although the high school grounds behind Hall Park and the May Fair grounds are still dusty because of construction, all the classrooms are finished and waiting for furniture, according to Eusebio.

"We're getting brand new furniture for everything," he said.
    ...
"In construction we always like to be ahead and not behind," said Eusebio, adding that the four months of rain in 2006 really put the project behind.

"We tried to recover some of the time. The most difficult parts are pretty much complete."

Construction of the cafeteria, Eusebio said, is really coming down to the wire, but he said not to worry.

"Not having the cafeteria ready won't prevent us from opening on time," he said.
    ...
"There is a lot of space for the kids to grow," Eusebio added.

The school campus sits on 80 acres donated to the district, 50 acres for buildings and athletic fields and 30 acres for the school's farm.

The microphone was then passed to Ed Eusebio, director of facilities, who gave a Powerpoint presentation of the proposed school layout.

The presentation went over the details of athletic fields, a performing arts complex and a potential outdoor amphitheater.Classrooms will be grouped by subject, along with all administrative offices.

The estimated cost for constructing the school is $50 million for the 80-acre site, which is approximately four times the size of Dixon High School.

Rumors of making the new school a three-year high school and moving the freshman class to the junior high were squashed by Eusebio, easing the public mind and helping to dispel other potential rumors.

The new stage classroom cost hardly anything, said Ed Eusebio, senior director of facilities. The accordion curtain was already in place, and the divider wall in the staff room accommodating band instruction was less than $2,000, he said.

The School Board is currently working on the crowded classroom dilemma, but so far, has taken no action.

"We have been waiting for this money," said Ed Eusebio, senior director of school facilities and planning."This is a done deal, and we just have to come up with some of the funds."

The passage of Proposition 47 guarantees that the state will pay $1.7 million for the modernization project.

Proposition 47 passed on Nov. 5 by 62 percent of the votes in Yolo County; in all of California, it passed with 54.9 percent.

    ...
"It was definitely very important to the state of California and especially Dixon" said Eusebio."Without it, we couldn't build a new high school."

Dixon Unified School District plans on starting the application process for the new high school soon.According to Eusebio, the request will be processed when the architectural plans are finalized.

The new high school is being built to serve the growing Dixon area. The last high school Dixon built was in 1940, to serve 250 students.Portable classrooms have been added since then.

With no room to expand, Dixon had to look for other options.

    ...
"There is just no more room to add on," said Eusebio.

There is a three-step process for Dixon Unified School District to apply for the bond money. The building plans for each project must go through the California Department of Education where they approve the school site and its construction plans. It also must go through a division of the state architect to approve the building plan to adhere to building and safety codes.

"The longer all of this takes, the more chances we have of not getting the state match on the money that's still available," said Ed Eusebio, senior director of facilities."It's as simple as that."

The district is counting on about $11 million coming from the state for the project, under Proposition 47, a school bond passed by California voters in 2002.
