The goal of the Monterey County Composers Forum, founded in 2000 by King City music teacher Steve Ettinger, is to provide a context for local composers to share their compositions with each other and the wider community. The group's current membership includes around 15 individuals of all ages and backgrounds, who meet monthly to plan future concerts and to discuss issues of musical interest. Most of the group's current composers are writing music in the classical, popular, and folk styles.
Ettinger, who began studying the violin at age 5, sees the Forum as part of a wider mission to make music composition, performance and enjoyment as inclusive as possible. But there are personal benefits as well, as when a composer gets to hear her or his work performed by other musicians.
"I can't describe it," Ettinger says, "it's incredibly emotional, like giving birth!"He adds that hearing one's own work performed by others becomes part of the learning process that accompanies any compositional effort.
