Remaining in her hometown, Julia attended the State Normal and Training School in Potsdam.After receiving her diploma, she dedicated the remainder of her life to music and music education.

Crane began exploring and implementing ways in which students would be provided with quality music education.In 1884, she returned to Potsdam Normal School, this time as part of the faculty, where she established a music department and taught using her own techniques and music theories.After two years of teaching, she made one of her most notable contributions to music education when she founded the Crane Normal Institute of Music, now named the Crane School of Music.

The Crane School of Music still stands in New York as the oldest music education institution in the United States, continuing to educate and encourage great musicians and educators.
