   In the past, the emergency room physician was initially involved in the stabilization of the patient, said Cindy Etheridge, emergency room nurse manager at Delta Regional. The trauma system shifts some of the responsibility back to the surgeon in the initial resuscitation.. What the new procedure does is free up emergency room personnel to handle other incoming patients, Etheridge said. The diagnosis and assessment of a trauma patient's condition can be done much more quickly, she said.
