"The Hispanic community has woken up," said Ruben Estrada, president of the Republican National Hispanic Association of Orange County.
The Republican Party, he said Thursday, is the one speaking to core Hispanic values of self-sufficiency, limited governance and conservative family mores.
Years ago, many Hispanics feared reprisal from unions if they made known their GOP affinities, he said. That fear is ebbing as GOP groups become more active, he said.
Broadening reach
Reflecting the region's growing number of GOP Hispanics, Estrada's chapter is "looking to expand" into Dutchess, Ulster and other counties, he said.
"It's going to cover the whole region," he said.

Estrada, however, feels an increasing number of Hispanics are realizing they don't need the "give-aways" Democrats offer.
Instead, he said, the minority group wants economic stimuli that can lead to self-sufficiency. More and more Hispanics are seeing that's the GOP ticket to success, he said.
Estrada cited President Bush's recent appointment of Carlos Gutierrez, chief executive of the Kellogg company, as Commerce secretary.
