Apparently, former Albuquerque High boys basketball coach Ron Estrada has bonded enough with high school athletes - despite an 0-24 season in 2004-05 - to land the new athletics director position at Albuquerque High, Principal Linda Sink said Wednesday.

"Ron's been here for almost 15 years now, and he has a lot of experience with teaching kids," said Sink, who picked Estrada out of a pool of "a few" candidates.

"The athletics director job is a very difficult one, but Ron's qualified."
The top agenda for Estrada, who could not be reached after several phone calls from The Tribune, will be to reshape Albuquerque High's recent dwindling athletic performances.

Sink said Estrada will concentrate on attracting kids from the six middle schools to attend Albuquerque High.

Estrada succeeded Hulsman in 2002 after 11 years as Hulsman's assistant.

After the Bulldogs lost 62-42 to Manzano in the district tournament, capping off the winless season, Estrada still had the peppiness of an avid expresso drinker.
"You just analyze your mistakes, get up and go to work every morning and do it again," Estrada said after that game.
