Dr. Ricardo Estrada, Director of Budget and Operations & Director of Carreras en SaludPrior to joining Instituto, Dr. Estrada successfully worked at community colleges and in the private education sector for more than 25 years.He contributed to the development of several adult education, vocational and workforce development models that led to the career advancement of nontraditional student populations.Dr. Estrada holds an MBA from North Park University and a Doctor in Education from National Louis University.

"Our objective is to target individuals who work in a healthcare setting but are not currently in patient-related positions," said Dr. Ricardo Estrada, Director of Instituto's healthcare career initiative, Carreras en Salud: A Chicago Healthcare Partnership."For example, staff who currently work in a hospital's administrative, janitorial or dining services departments will be given the opportunity to expand their careers and become CNAs or other related positions," he said.

According to Ricardo Estrada, Ph.D., and director of Carreras En Salud, there is a great need for Spanish-speaking health care workers."We have some hospitals [in Chicago] where 90 percent of patients are Spanish-speaking," says Estrada, who cites Saint Anthony Hospital, adjacent to the Little Village community, as an example.

"Hospitals recognize that once an individual has the CNA certification plus EKG and phlebotomy classes, he/she is considered a patient care technician," says Estrada.

According to Estrada, the Carreras En Salud program has been so successful that it has received funding through the year 2007.
