Both spans of the old bridge will be dismantled and deposited in the Gulf of Mexico to create an artificial reef, said Bryan Estock, project manager for Parsons Brinckerhoff Construction Services. -

Bryan Estock, resident engineer for Parsons Brinckerhoff, the consultant engineer on the job, says the trees along the causeway had to be removed so contractors could put ditches in.
"We were not aware people wanted the trees," Estock said. "We've instructed the contractor to notify us if any plants or trees are in the way. If people want, they can come get them." As for replacing the trees already removed, however, Estock says that's not part of the plan.
"There's nothing in the contractor's contract to replace any trees. The grass will be replaced," he said.

Estock said work on the causeway between Apalachicola and Eastpoint should be completed by August at the latest.
The company is looking for other areas in the county to create stormwater treatment sites because DEP requires them to provide mitigation for the same area encompassed by the new St. George Island bridge.
"Due to the acreage the bridge will be taking up, DEP require acre-for-acre treatment," Estock said.
Mitigation on St. George Island has been completed, Estock said, and the sand piles at the end of the bridge will be used to fill the embankment behind a retaining wall for the new bridge. The sand will stay where it is until it's needed, Estock said.
Estock said there isn't a separate figure for each mitigation project, but the entire mitigation project will cost around $1.2 million. -
