Luther Erickson Awarded Iowa Medal by Regional American Chemical Society.

GRINNELL , Iowa - The Iowa section of the American Chemical Society awarded the Iowa Award Medal to Luther E. Erickson , professor of chemistry , Grinnell College , at an awards banquet on April 18.

The award was presented to Erickson , the Dodge Professor of Chemistry at Grinnell College , to recognize his lifetime of achievements in the area of teaching and research in the chemical sciences..Erickson is the 26th recipient of the award.

The award recognizes meritorious achievement by an Iowa chemist in research , teaching , or industry.The award consists of a gold medal.

Luther's example of placing the educational needs of his students first has been inspirational for many faculty..

Erickson joined the faculty at Grinnell College in 1962 and ceased classroom teaching in 1997.During his tenure at Grinnell , he served as science division chair and chair of the faculty.He also served as president of the Midwest Association of Chemistry Teachers and as president of the Iowa Academy of Science.

Throughout his career at Grinnell College , Erickson has maintained an active research program in nuclear magnetic resonance ( nmr ) spectroscopy and the co-ordination chemistry of platinum group metals.Now on senior faculty status , he is continuing to involve Grinnell students in his research , which is supported in part by a Senior Scientist Mentor grant from the Dreyfus Foundation.
