Lucille Jeanette (Coolen) Erickson, 96, , of Walker, Minn., and formerly of Cass Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at the May Creek Lodge Assisted Living in Walker, Minn.

She was born March 26, 1911, in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Charles and Flora (Cochran) Coolen.She was the salutatorian of the first graduating class of Big Fork High School in 1929.She graduated from Bemidji State Teachers College in 1932 and taught at the Dunbar Lake, Grattan and Blackberry Country Schools.

She married Axel J. Erickson on June 29, 1940, at her parent's home in Big Fork, Minn.Together they moved to Cass Lake.She returned to school at Bemidji State College and graduated in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in education.She taught school and was principal at Bena Elementary from 1958 to 1976, when she retired.She was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Garden Club, Lions Club, League of Women Voters, Reading Club, Roland Chapter of the Eastern Star in Cass Lake and the Cass Lake-Bena Retired Teachers' Association.

The couple enjoyed spending the winter months in Weslaco, Texas, where she volunteered at the Harlingen and Weslaco schools as a tutor and mentor.They also enjoyed their summer home on Pike Bay for 42 years, which provided years of pleasant memories for family and friends.She will be remembered for her dedication as a wife for 54 years, a loving mother, a dedicated teacher, for her love of playing the piano and her involvement with her community and friends.
