George Washington Elementary School Principal Tony Erena, whose school is less than a half mile from the Boys & Girls Club, said Power Hour has contributed to a recent rise in fourth-grade math scores.
"Many of our Midtown students walk to the club on a daily basis," he said.

My son Tony took part in the the Captain's Ladder program from it's inception and on thru high school. We lived within walking distance from "The Club" and pretty much everyday he went directly there from school. My first thought was he was going their to play basketball prior to coming home for dinner. After several times asking him, "do you have homework?"and him replying, "I did it already" I decided to quiz him how he could have his homework done already when he had been at the Boys and Girls Club playing basketball. He then told me about Captain's Ladder program and how he did his homework there and received points for prizes. He earned enough points to get "a real leather basketball" and good grades to boot. After a few years he mentioned to me that he sometimes "helped the little kids with their homework."(no, he didn't earn points for a prize but earned a lot of them in his heart) My son also 'recruited' his two best friends from next door into joining "The Club" telling them about the basketball and fun he had and also the Captain's Ladder program so they could do their homework there prior to having fun.

My son Tony still has much admiration for Joe even at the age of 22 and with a new family.
